How to Be a Good Neighbor — Part II

At one point or another, you’ve probably had a less-than-ideal living experience. Maybe you had neighbors who partied into the early hours of the morning every night of the week, or perhaps you had a roommate who never did the dishes or vacuumed, no matter how many hints you dropped. Whether you currently live in a home, apartment, townhome, or condo, living in close proximity to others requires a great deal of consideration. In today’s post, we’ll continue to provide you with tips that can help you be a better neighbor, no matter where you live.

Party Considerately

There’s nothing wrong with having friends over on the weekends or hosting parties throughout the week, as long as you’re not disrupting your neighbors’ lives. Whether you’re hosting a small gathering or hosting a full-on birthday bash, it’s important to be aware of how much noise is coming from your apartment. As we noted in our previous post, low-end bass tones can travel through multiple walls, so you should always check with your neighbors to make sure that your music isn’t keeping them up. Give them your phone number in advance so that they can get in touch with you if things get too loud, as they may not feel comfortable asking you to turn down the volume in person.

You should also make sure that you’ve provided detailed instructions about parking before your guests arrive. You don’t want your guests inadvertently blocking someone’s property, and you certainly don’t want them to get towed because they parked in someone’s assigned spot.

Consider Curb Appeal

Maintaining your property’s appearance is one of the best ways to be courteous to the entire community. You don’t want your home to be an eyesore in the community, and some areas will even fine you if you’re not keeping up with your property! If you live in a home, townhome, or condo, make sure that your lawn is well-manicured and that your walkways are clear whenever it snows. Take down your holiday lights in a reasonable timeframe, and periodically update your exterior decor if it becomes weathered and worn.

Of course, you won’t have to worry about the majority of these details if you live in our Windsor apartments, but they’re always a good reminder for those who live in properties with landscapes.

Timing Is Key

If you live in an apartment, then remember that your actions will almost always affect your neighbors in one way or another. Avoid hanging artwork or hammering nails into the wall past 8:00 p.m., and try to be quiet in the morning if you know that your neighbors aren’t early risers. Every situation is different, and as we’ve mentioned several times in this post, communication is the best way to determine what is and is not appropriate in your specific circumstances.

Welcome New Neighbors

Welcoming new neighbors (or conversely, introducing yourself to the neighborhood) is one of the best ways to foster a warm and welcoming community. Exchange phone numbers with everyone you meet so that they can get in touch with you should they need anything, and consider hosting a small get-together to help newcomers feel right at home.

At Pelican Bluff Apartments, we’re proud to have one of the friendliest communities in Northern Colorado. Our Windsor apartments are home to a wide range of people with different backgrounds and lifestyles, and you’ll feel right at home from the day you move in. We have a pool, cyber cafe, gym, and a clubhouse, and becoming a regular at any of these locations is a great way to get to know other members of the community.
