Stock Up On Food And Water

As we’ll discuss in the next section, driving during a winter storm is a bad idea. While we understand that nobody likes waiting in long lines at the grocery store, it’s important to make sure that you have plenty of food and water before a storm. Dry goods and non-perishables are always a safe bet, as you can never anticipate if the storm will knock out the power in your area.

While you’re thinking about the essentials, take note of any prescription medications that are running low and be sure to refill them while you’re out.

Avoid Driving

If you absolutely have to leave, then drive with extreme caution and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. Even if the roads aren’t slick, you can never be sure that other drivers are exercising the same amount of caution as you are. Drive with extra distance between you and other motorists, and make sure that you’ve saved emergency numbers in your phone should you have to call for help.

Watch For Signs Of Hypothermia

Should you become stranded or lose power, it’s important to be on the lookout for signs of hypothermia, which occurs when the body’s temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The most common signs of hypothermia include:

  • Uncontrollable shivering
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Impaired mobility
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty staying awake

Call 911 immediately if you or someone you know is experiencing the symptoms of hypothermia.

Monitor The News

Periodically check in with your local news station to keep yourself informed about when the storm will let up and if it’s safe to venture out of your residence. If your television or internet connection has been interrupted by the storm, then use your smartphone or ask a neighbor to keep you updated.
