Easy Ways to Declutter and Save Space — Part II

It’s no secret that clutter can accumulate quickly and stick around for years.

Whether your apartment is filled with sentimental objects or belongings you’ve collected over the years, it’s easy for your stuff to use more of your living space than you do! In a previous post, we provided you with a few ways to reduce clutter and make the most of your space, so be sure to go back and read through that information if you haven’t yet seen it. In today’s post, we’re going to continue our discussion and provide you with a few more ways to save space in your apartment.

Pelican Bluff offers luxury apartments in Windsor that have plenty of space for single occupants, roommates, and families. We offer amazing amenities and unbeatable views, so come by our leasing office or give us a call to learn more!

how to declutter your apartment

One In, One Out

While it sounds simple, the one in, one out rule is one of the most powerful tools in any decluttering arsenal. It’s most commonly used in bedrooms and closets, though it can be used to manage any kind of collection or overabundance of items. Before you make a purchase, ask yourself if you’re prepared to get rid of something else in its place. If not, then you can probably save money and make do with what you already have.

Get Rid Of Aspirational Clutter

As the name suggests, this type of clutter refers to things you’ve purchased with the intention of using, but just haven’t used yet (and if we’re being honest, probably won’t). Your aspirational clutter will differ according to your interests and tastes, but in general, some of the most common examples include:

  • Books
  • Discounted clothing
  • Shoes
  • Exercise equipment
  • Video games

Aspirational clutter doesn’t have to be limited to things you’ve purchased for yourself. That cookbook you got for your birthday five years back? Unless you’ve made the time to open it up and cook something since you received it, it can probably go, too.

Distinguish Trash From Clutter

While clutter can be organized and managed, trash often disguises itself as clutter and can easily become unmanageable. While we won’t list every kind of trash that might be taking up space in your apartment, you should consider if the following items are unnecessarily taking up space:

  • Newspapers
  • Old magazines
  • Items that need to be repaired
  • Old electronics and cables
  • Knick-knacks that you no longer display
  • Clothing that needs to be hemmed or repaired

While we understand that it can be difficult to determine which of your items should be thrown out and which should stay, learning how to tastefully make this distinction is one of the easiest ways to make your living space more open and enjoyable.
